Total noob question about downloading images

I sometimes put Retropie systems together for myself and friends. Retropie uses TheGamesDb as the default source for game images. On a fresh install I am able to get some of the images, guessing about 1000, and then I appear to be cut off.
What is the process to get more images? I need like 5-6K Is that what an API request is? Can I make a donation to get more? I apologize for my ignorance. I did say I was a noob.
